Some BC Winners at The World Beer Cup

April 12, 2010

While I was down in Penticton for the Okanagan Fest-of-Ale the winners of the World Cup of Beer were announced at the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago. This years World Cup of Beer turned out to be the largest beer judging competition ever with 3330 entries from 642 breweries in 44 different countries. There were 90 categories meaning 270 medals were up for grabs. 7 Canadian beers won a medal. 4 of those were from BC. 2 of them were from one brewery, Russell.

Category 53: English-Style India Pale Ale

Bronze – Russell IP’eh!, Russell Brewing, Surrey BC

Category 57: Scottish-Style Ale

Bronze – Russell Wee Angry Scotch Ale, Russell Brewing, Surrey BC

Category 58: English-Style Mild Ale

Bronze – Whistler Black Tusk Ale, Whistler Brewing, Vancouver BC

Category 68: Barley Wine-Style Ale

Silver – Thor’s Hammer, Central City Brewing, Surrey BC

Shameless cut and pasted from Canadian Beer News.

  1. Goodness me it speaks volumes about the entrants if the Russell IP’Eh placed in the best IPA. It’s decent enough, don’t get me wrong, but I can name a dozen others I’d rather drink, and I know you can too, man.

Any word on Victoria return yet? I got a special one or two in the cellar…

  2. I don’t want to take anything away from the breweries who won medals, but it’s not so much who won as who didn’t enter. This contest is incredibly US-based in it’s entrants. American breweries make up about two thirds of the entries.

Only 6 BC breweries entered. Central City, Russell, Whistler, R&B, Gulf Islands, Tree. The fact that 3 of them won a medal is pretty good.

The return to Victoria is still on for sometime in the Summer. Trying to get the logistics figured out still.
