BC Beer – Fernie’s What The Huck

June 17, 2010

Fernie Brewing recently started to bottle two of their previously draft-only beers. As you can guess What the Huck is one of them, and the other is Ol’ Willy Wit. This is my first beer from Fernie Brewing. I must say that I enjoy it. I’m off to Sparwood for work for several days tomorrow. Sparwood is only 25 minutes away from the incredibly remote Fernie. Maybe I can sneak out a snag a pint of something else from Fernie.

What The Huck pours a lasciviously brilliant orange-copper. I do love uniquely coloured beers. The aroma is dominated by malt and yeast aromas more than that of the huckleberry. We got flavours of wheat, sweet malt, very mild spice, banana and, of course, huckleberries. All presented in a smooth and rounded manner with a tart and sweet finish. It could do with a bit more carbonation. I have a feeling this highly quaffable beer is based on a hefeweizen. Probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did.

Rating: Good

Looks like the Ol’ Willy Wit is only available in private stores.
You Albertans can also find these two newly bottled ales.
First Trax Brown Ale won silver in the People’s Choice Award at the Calgary International Beer Festival.
There are bunch of Fernie Brewing tastings through the month of July. Check out their events page for one near you.

  1. Yes, rather tasty. It’s lighter than many BC wheat ales, and I rather enjoy the huckleberry addition.

Drinking it right now. Finally a berry that belongs in a beer. Nice and earthy. Makes me think that a blueberry beer could be good.
