BC Beer – Spinnakers Happy New Beer

December 31, 2010

Today is New Year’s Eve, if you didn’t know that. A day where massive amounts of booze is consumed. Spinnakers decided to help make your choice of beer even harder by putting out a witbier. Wanna know if it’s worthy of ringing in the New Year? Read on, or just skip to the bottom.

This is possibly Spinnakers’ most local beer made to date. Happy New Beer is a Belgian style Witbier, brewed with Mike Doehnel’s malted wheat & barley from the Saanich Peninsula, Saanich grown coriander, Cliff Leir’s (Fol Epi bakery) bran and Silk Road Tea’s Chamomile tea.

A witbier is an interesting choice of a beer style to commemorate a new year with. Then again, Happy New Beer is an interesting beer. While very witbier in presentation, but only a shadow in every other regard. Faint aromas of orange, malt and soft wheat. A lemon flavour joins in on when drank. The body is rather weird, it starts off very spritzy, almost like Sprite, which quickly ends. It then finishes watery with a lingering orange flavour. I found Happy New Beer to be very one-dimensional and rather bland. Last year I popped a La Fin Du Monde from Unibroue at midnight. I’ll probably do it again tonight, or find something similar.
